How to Clean an Air Purifier

We get it–no one wants anything that’s high maintenance. That’s why at Alen, we believe that maintaining your air purifier should be straightforward and allow it to continuously function effectively. It's as easy as 1-2-3, so take a minute to review these simple steps for keeping your Alen in top condition:

  • Turn off and unplug the unit before starting any maintenance.
  • Remove the front panel to access the filter.
  • Either vacuum the filter while it’s still in the unit or remove the filter from the unit.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and debris from the pre-filter, which helps to extend the life of the main filter.
  • Depending on how much lifter life is left, either vacuum it or replace it with a new one.
  • Wipe down the inside and outside of the unit with a damp cloth, ensuring no dust or debris remains.
  • Once the filter is replaced, reassemble the unit.
  • Plug the air purifier back in, turn it on, and ensure it's running smoothly.

By cleaning your Alen air purifier every few months to keep it in excellent condition, you’ll be assured that you and your family are breathing air that’s been Alenized all day, every day.

Can You Wash a HEPA Filter?

HEPA filters are great in that they can capture tiny particles up to 0.1 micron with 99.9% efficiency–the gold star for high-quality air purification. However, not all HEPA filters are made the same and their maintenance requirements vary. Water can damage their delicate fibers and reduce their efficiency. Alen HEPA filters are not washable, which can compromise their integrity and filtration capacity. Alen HEPA filters should be replaced when they become clogged with dust and pollutants to ensure you get consistency across filters.

If it’s not yet time to replace the filter, you can gently vacuum the surface to remove dust and debris. Regularly vacuuming helps to extend the life of the filter without causing damage before a replacement is due. You can always refer to your specific air purifier’s manual for maintenance instructions.

How to Clean an Activated Carbon Air Filter

Cleaning activated carbon filters is the same for all other filters. Follow these easy cleaning steps:

  • Turn off and unplug the purifier.
  • Remove the front panel.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to gently remove dust and debris from the surface. Don’t use water on activated carbon filters.
  • After cleaning, secure the front panel.
  • Plug the unit in and power it on to ensure it’s running properly.

If you’re trying to target household smells, Alen has filter options to neutralize odors: Alen’s Advanced filter with activated carbon is best for smoke, VOCs, and common household odors. These filters absorb gasses and odors onto the surface of the carbon and are most effective with regular vacuuming. The Odor filter is best for pet, diaper-related, and other stubborn bathroom odors. Take control of your indoor air quality and breathe clean air for years to come!

How Often Should I Clean My Air Purifier Filter?

Remember, regular maintenance of your air purifier filter is essential for its optimal performance. We recommend you refer to the manufacturer’s recommended filter replacement intervals. Here are the recommended replacement intervals for the BreatheSmart air purifier models:

On many models, including Alen air purifiers, a filter light indicates when to change filters. For an Alen, the LED light on the unit’s control panel turning orange means 85% filter usage and a red light means 100% usage and it’s time to change the filter.

Several factors–high usage, pet hair, smoke, or living in a polluted area–may necessitate more frequent cleaning than the recommended guidelines. Be sure to regularly check and clean your filters outside of these intervals, especially if you notice an increase in indoor pollutants such as dust, pet hair, or pollen, or start to experience allergic reactions or asthma flare-ups.
