Air Purifiers for Chemicals & VOC's
Take control of your indoor air environment by addressing unhealthy chemicals.
Alen BreatheSmart HEPA air purifiers for chemicals provide protection against airborne chemicals and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Our Fresh and FreshPlus HEPA filters contain activated carbon to capture harmful particles and odors released by household cleaners, paints, personal care products, cooking, and other sources.

If you have chemicals and cooking odors in your home, you may need a chemical air purifier. We all want our home to smell pleasant, but strong cooking smells and chemicals from products we use can cloud the air with strong odors. Getting an air purifier can help, but many models are not equipped to remove these kinds of indoor pollutants. Odors and chemicals can be difficult to remove from the air and require specific types of air filtration to be eliminated. Read on to learn more about how to select an air purifier that reduces the gaseous pollutants in your home.
Poor Indoor Air Quality: Chemicals and Strong Odors
Chemical contaminants can impact indoor air quality. These contaminants can come from many sources, both inside and outside of your home. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are common contaminants found in many products, including carpeting, building materials, scented products (personal care items, air fresheners, etc.), fabrics, and cleaning agents. If the contaminant source is not controlled or ventilation is lacking, VOCs can build up and negatively impact indoor environmental quality. According to the EPA, common organic pollutants are two to five times higher inside homes than outdoors.
VOCs and Adverse Health Effects
Some VOCs and toxic chemicals can cause short- and long-term negative health effects. The effects may range from mild, such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, to severe, including damage to your liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Medical experts suspect that some organic chemicals may cause cancer in humans since they are known to cause cancer in animals.
Here are common signs or symptoms that can indicate exposure to VOCs:
- Allergic skin reaction
- Conjunctival irritation
- Reduction in serum cholinesterase levels
Are Air Purifiers Effective at Removing Chemicals and Odors?
Some types of air filters can reduce the chemical contaminants in your home. However, not all air purifiers can remove them, and some can even add harmful chemicals to the air. When you need to remove airborne chemicals and gases, you need air filtration options with gas-phase filters. The air purifiers you are most familiar with likely remove airborne particles (dust mites, pollen, pet dander, etc.) from the air, not gas.
Air Purifiers to Avoid
Air cleaning devices fall into two categories: mechanical air filters and electronic air filters. Mechanical air filters use a fan, while electronic ones use electrostatic attraction, a process by which charged particles are trapped.
Electrostatic Air Purifier
An electrostatic air purifier can capture both liquids and solids using an electrically charged panel, but it cannot remove gaseous pollutants likes VOCs.
Ozone generators (not the same as an ozone-safe ionizer) release ozone into the air. It is not effective at removing VOCs and may introduce more dangerous molecules into your environment. Note that ozone generators are different than an ozone-safe ionizer, which can be certified to produce ozone emission concentrations of less than 0.050 parts per million and improve filtration efficiency.
If you have had an air purifier before, chances are that it was a mechanical air purifier with HEPA filtration. If used correctly, high-quality models can be quite effective at filtering out airborne particles, but unless the HEPA filter is equipped with other filtration technology, it will not remove gaseous pollutants like VOCs.
The Best Air Purifier for VOCs
If you outfit a mechanical air purifier with an activated carbon filter, it can remove chemical odors, including VOCs, from your indoor spaces. Some activated carbon filters on the market also feature HEPA filtration so that you can get rid of gases and airborne particles at the same time.
Activated Carbon Filters for Chemicals and Cooking Odors
These special filters use a bed of activated carbon to combat the chemicals and odors around your home. The carbon undergoes additional processing to activate it, resulting in carbon that is better at filtering out gas molecules. Carbon air filters were crucial to the development of gas masks that protected troops during World War I. The technology is also used in water filters to provide you with cleaner drinking water.
Selecting the Right Chemical Air Purifier with Activated Carbon Filter
There are several factors to consider when choosing an air purifier that is effective at chemical and cooking odor removal.
Air purifiers with powerful, high-speed fans can serve a larger area.
Clean Air Delivery Rate
The clean air delivery rate (CADR) is a rating system that tells how many air particles a portable air cleaner can filter and how large an area it can serve. Keep in mind that this rating system refers to airborne particles, not gases. However, if you are looking for an air purifier that will remove both particles and chemicals, you may still care about the CADR. Aside from the CADR, the brand may provide information about how many square feet the air purifier can serve. You can purchase an air purifier for every room, or you can move the air purifier with you from room to room throughout the day. An air purifier works best at filtering the air immediately around it, which is why you must either move it around or place one in every room.
Activated Carbon Filter Options
An air purifier with a powerful fan is great, but if the brand does not offer activated carbon filters, it will not remove the gas molecules that cause indoor air pollution.
If cost is a consideration for you, you probably comparison shop the prices of different models of air purifiers, but there are other costs you should consider, too.
- The cost of activated carbon filters
- How frequently the filter must be replaced
- The cost to run the unit continuously
- The life expectancy of the unit and whether it had a lifetime warranty
Air cleaners with a longer runtime can filter more air. Look for one that you can run continuously to reduce indoor air pollution.
